Khanh Hoa: official prosecuted for corruption

The People’s Procuracy of Khanh Hoa Province yesterday, June 21, ratified the prosecution decision against an expert of the local Department of Planning and Investment for corruption.

In early 2007, Sky Resort Co, Ltd of the Republic of Korea asked for Khanh Hoa authorities’ permission to invest in the northern part of Cam Ranh peninsula. Phan Xuan Tung, an expert of the Khanh Hoa Department of Planning and Investment, was assigned to perform formalities related to this project to submit to provincial leaders for approval.

The Korean investor asked for Tung’s assistance to get the licence quickly and gave him US$70,000 as tip. Waiting for a long time without seeing the licence, the Korean investors reported to Khanh Hoa leaders that Tung had taken their money.

On May 22, 2007, Tung had to pay back US$60,000 to the Korean investor under the witness of officials of the Khanh Hoa Department of Planning and Investment and will have to pay the remaining $10,000 in mid July.

The Khanh Hoa Department of Planning and Investment’s director on June 14 signed a decision to dismiss Tung.
